Explain the Importance of the Outsider in the Novel ââ¬Ëof Mice and Menââ¬â¢ Free Essays
Explain the importance of the outsider in the novel ââ¬ËOf Mice and Menââ¬â¢ An outsider is someone who is not accepted or is isolated from society. ââ¬ËOf Mice and Menââ¬â¢ is set in the 1930ââ¬â¢s, where society considered many people as outsiders. During this period, many people were racist, sexist and prejudice towards disabled people. We will write a custom essay sample on Explain the Importance of the Outsider in the Novel ââ¬Ëof Mice and Menââ¬â¢ or any similar topic only for you Order Now This is shown with several characters in the novel including Crooks, Curlyââ¬â¢s wife and Candy who are all considered as outsiders in this novel, since they each had something that the society at that time were prejudice towards. In the 1930ââ¬â¢s black people were highly discriminated against. This was mainly because many black people started to migrate form the south to the north in order to find employment. Many blacks stared to establish their own neighbourhoods, businesses and restaurants. All this activity caused competition to grow with the whites already living in these areas and many white people werenââ¬â¢t used to black people living in their community and this caused a lot of tension between whites and blacks. Furthermore, because of the Great Depression many people lost their jobs and had to find new jobs, and the blacks who had migrated up north, started to take available jobs. The white people living in the north became angry that the blacks were taking over their positions. The character Crooks from the novel, is an old black man with a crooked back. He is probably the most discriminated against since he is black and disabled, which means he canââ¬â¢t do as much work as the other. He works as a stable buck at the ranch, but although he has a job, we can assume that he gets the lowest wage on the ranch because he is black. This is shown in the novel since he doesnââ¬â¢t have a proper bed; instead he has ââ¬Ëa long box filled with straw, on which blankets were flung. This is probably because of his low social status and therefore doesnââ¬â¢t get the same as the other workers on the farm, which includes a proper bed. Furthermore he is separated form the other workers, since he lives in ââ¬Ëin the harness room; a little shed that leaned off the wall of the barnââ¬â¢ rather than in the workers room, like the rest of the workers. Crooks himsel f shows this when he says ââ¬Å"I ainââ¬â¢t wanted in the bunk houseâ⬠¦ ââ¬ËCause Iââ¬â¢m blackâ⬠. Again, this is probably because of his low social status, and because of this he is excluded from the rest of he workers. We are shown just how low his social status is when we find he must share his medicine with the animals, ââ¬Å"a range of medicine bottles, both for himself and for the horsesâ⬠. This shows us because of his skin colour, he has to use what is available, rather than having his own possessions, and that he is almost equal to an animal, in the eyes of the society. Crooks often acts like he doesnââ¬â¢t want anyone in his space, for example when Lennie enters his room he says, ââ¬ËYouââ¬â¢ve got no right coming in my room. This hereââ¬â¢s my room. ââ¬â¢ He acts like this because he feels that if he isnââ¬â¢t aloud in the white peopleââ¬â¢s houses, they shouldnââ¬â¢t be aloud in his. However his desire for company ultimately wins out when he invites Lennie in his room. Also when Candy comes into his room, Steinbeck tells us ââ¬ËIt was difficult for Crooks to conceal his pleasure with anger. ââ¬â¢ This shows us that although Crooks wants to act like he doesnââ¬â¢t want people coming into his room, he actually is happy when people talk to him, since he is an outsider and doesnââ¬â¢t have any company. Another character who is considered an outsider in the novel is Candyââ¬â¢s wife. In the novel, she is never given a name and this is probably since she has no importance in society. During Steinbeckââ¬â¢s time, women were not held in high regard, but were just present to serve men. Curlyââ¬â¢s wife is neglected by Curly and because of this she is always seeking attention. This is shown by the way she dresses with ââ¬ËRed mulesââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËBouquets of red ostrich feathersââ¬â¢. She is ââ¬Ëheavily made upââ¬â¢ and has ââ¬Ërouged lipsââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëher fingernails were redââ¬â¢. Steinbeck uses this imagery to portray her as provocative, since red was a very provocative colour in this period. She dresses like this since she knows her beauty is her only power in this society and is they only way to get attention, which she doesnââ¬â¢t get form Curly. However, by trying to get the attention of other men, she steps outside her role as a married women, and this is probably why she is often called a ââ¬Ëtrampââ¬â¢ or a ââ¬Ëtartââ¬â¢. Straight away George senses that she is trouble and says ââ¬ËYou keep away from her, causeââ¬â¢ sheââ¬â¢s a rattrap if I ever seen one. ââ¬â¢ George knows that Curly would be very angry if he caught one of the men flirting back with her, but not because he is jealous but because he seeââ¬â¢s his wife as his property, rather than a person, and this is probably another reason why she is named as Curlyââ¬â¢s wife. Just like Crooks, since she is an outsider, Curlyââ¬â¢s wife is looking for constantly looking for company and the perfect opportunity to talk to someone is when goes Curly is out with the workers. All who are left are ââ¬Ëthe weak onesââ¬â¢-herself, Candy, Crooks and Lennie. She even says it herself- ââ¬ËStandinââ¬â¢ here talkinââ¬â¢ to a bunch of bindle stiffs-a nigger anââ¬â¢ a dum-dum and a lousy olââ¬â¢ sheep-anââ¬â¢ likinââ¬â¢ it because they ainââ¬â¢t nobody elseââ¬â¢. However, she is so desperate for companionship that she talks to them anyway. She is ââ¬Ëbreathing strongly, as though she had been runningââ¬â¢; again this shows us just how desperate and lonely she is as an outsider. In addition, Candy is another character who can be considered as an outsider. He is an old man, left with only one hand as the result of an accident at work. Because of his disability he cannot do the labour that the others do, and so has a demeaning job as a ââ¬Ëswamperââ¬â¢- the man who cleans out the bunk house. We know he is old, since when Steinbeck first introduces him, he describes him with lots of words that show him to be old and weak, such as ââ¬Ëold manââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëstoop shoulderedââ¬â¢. He often uses lots of anecdotes which show that he remises on the past, like many old people do and that he has been on the ranch a long time. Also, he often repeats himself, which shows that his memory is deteriorating and he is ageing. Candy knows that he is getting weaker, and that soon his boss will soon declare him as useless and he will lose his job- ââ¬ËTheyââ¬â¢ll can be pretty soon. Jusââ¬â¢ as soon as I canââ¬â¢t swamp out no more bunk houses theyââ¬â¢ll put me on the county. ââ¬â¢ Because he canââ¬â¢t afford to lose his job he doesnââ¬â¢t challenge anything. When they shoot his dog, since itââ¬â¢s too old, he feels even lonelier since his dog was his only real friend. Also it reminds him that when he becomes old, he will no longer be needed. Candy even says to George, ââ¬Ëyou seen what they done to my dog tonight? They says he wasnââ¬â¢t no good to himself or nobody else. When they can me here I wisht somebodyââ¬â¢d shoot me to. ââ¬â¢ He says this because without a job he will have nowhere to go since because of his age, disability and the Depression he canââ¬â¢t get another job. Candy is excluded from the workers social life by his age, his disability and his demeaning job, but also by his own choice-ââ¬ËI didnââ¬â¢t go in there. I ainââ¬â¢t got no poop no more. ââ¬â¢ He knows he is too old to socialize and this makes him an outsider since he canââ¬â¢t do what the other workers do since he is too old. In conclusion, I think Steinbeck uses outsiders, such as Candy, Crooks and Curlyââ¬â¢s wife, to try to show the discrimination against gender, race, age and disability in 1930ââ¬â¢s society and how it affected the lifeââ¬â¢s of outsiders of 1930ââ¬â¢s society. The Microsoft Antitrust Law Suit. Essays - Microsoft,
The Microsoft Antitrust Law Suit. Recently one of the biggest corporations in the United States, Microsoft had to face several ultimatums from the government. The case against Microsoft was brought by the U.S. Department of Justice, as well as several state Attorneys General. Microsoft is accused of using and maintaining monopoly power to gain an unfair advantage in software market. The case has been under observation for a long time, but the Justice department is having trouble coming up with substantial evidence against Microsoft. Specifically, the Department must prove: That Microsoft has monopoly power and is using it to gain unfair leverage in the market. And that Microsoft has maintained this monopoly power through predatory actions. Many people feel that Microsoft is only taking advantage of its position in the market and using marketing strategies to attract new customers. They have chosen to implement a market development strategy to attract new customers, who are looking for a system that has Internet capab ility. Microsoft feels that by integrating their Internet Explorer web browser technology into Windows, they are only improving its functionality available to the customer. Some people, especially the judge, say that Microsoft began its illegal agenda when it began requiring PC manufacturers to sign a license agreement that said that, if they were going to have Windows preinstalled on their new systems, that the Windows Internet Explorer must also be installed. Although it is possible for consumers to install other browsers onto Windows and use them, critics say that Microsoft still has an unfair advantage. It also keeps other browser companies from being able to consult with PC manufacturers to put their browser on the PC from the beginning. When Netscape refused to bow before Microsoft, Microsoft decided to do everything in their power to limit the amount of resources that Netscape could access. Their methods were often compared to those of Andrew Carnegie's of Carnegie Steel, in the early 1900's. When a competitor would come into town, he would lower his prices way below cost to drive the competitor out of business. He could afford to do this because he already had the established capital to sustain him. He would just dip into reserves of cash for the time being, and the lowering of prices would not put him out of business. This was deemed illegal and his practice is one of the main reasons that the Sherman Antitrust Act was enacted. According to the Act, no company can engage in monopolistic activities intentionally. If they lowered their prices temporarily to drive out competition, while depending on their cash reserves to hold them over, this would be illegal. But, if they do not lower the price of their products below cost, then their strategy is just a form of true competition. However, Microsoft has good defense arguments. Microsoft defenders say that the situation should be compared to railroad analogy: Microsoft builds the tracks on which the rest of the industry ships its products and thats why Microsoft shouldnt be stopped. With Microsoft creating the standards for the rest of the computer industry, they are able to create better standards and build them much faster than if an outside organization was to create them. With these standards set, other companies are able to create their applications and other products that much faster, and better, and thus the customers receive that much better of a product. However Microsoft still l gets to ride the rails first. On May 12,2000,Microsoft offered an ultimatum or at least a small step towards the better solution. Microsoft agreed to take off Internet Explorer from Windows operating systems. The company said, that it may be a small step from the government point of view, however a big step in companys opinion. I personally, believe that the government should stay out of the affairs of the economy, rather than get tangled up in a mess and just end up deadlocked like the Federal Trade Commission did in 1990. And even if the government did get involved, due to the extremely fast paced nature of the computer industry, and the extremely slow nature of the government, there may not be any resolve for quite a while. I am one of those people,

Character Study of Andy For the Movie The Shawshank Redemption essays
Character Study of Andy For the Movie The Shawshank Redemption essays Andy was a great example of conversion. He really had goals and kept to them for years. He was a hard-determined person to achieve freedom. He was living a great life as a banker, and knew his profession well. He had everything going for him, except his true love. He had suspected his lover was cheating on him, and one day he caught her in the act. He went to get drunk and then came back with a gun. Bad thoughts came into his mind. He didnt follow through with this act, but someone else did. The situation showed that he had done it because of the brandy bottle with his fingerprints, he had the same kind of gun that matched the bullets used, and that it was a situation where he would be furious. The courts found him guilty and gave him a life sentence. After being sent to jail and being innocent, he first began to accept that he was in jail, and that there was no way to change it. After getting the rock pick and knocking the rock off the wall when he was trying to carve h is name, he realized that getting out was a possibility. This scene was the place where he had a major cross over. Then, he set out to gain his rightfully earned freedom. He finished off his crossing over when he realized with when he was sitting by the wall in the courtyard with Red. He said, You have to get busy living, or get busy dying. This scene made us think that he was going to hang himself, but instead he chose the road to living. I believe that Andy had some major new responses to life and himself. If he was never convicted, he would not of learned what he had learned. He found that it is a cruel world out there and he had it good. He had changed how he saw the world and people around him. He found out how to set serious goals, and keep up with them for years and years. In the real world as a banker, he most likely had everything provided for him with all the money he made. In prison, he had to learn how to get things...

Admonitions and Premonitions
Admonitions and Premonitions Admonitions and Premonitions Admonitions and Premonitions By Mark Nichol Admonition and premonition are two members of a small word family based on a root pertaining to scolding or warning. The family is introduced below. The Latin verb monere, meaning ââ¬Å"advise,â⬠ââ¬Å"express disapproval,â⬠or ââ¬Å"warn,â⬠is the root of admonition and premonition. Admonition and its sister noun admonishment are distinguished by the senses ââ¬Å"warning about behaviorâ⬠and ââ¬Å"criticism of behavior,â⬠respectively; the verb form, admonish, applies to both senses. A premonition, meanwhile, is a feeling of forewarning not based on conscious thought; unlike admonition, the noun does not take other forms. Monition itself, meanwhile, is a rare noun meaning ââ¬Å"cautionâ⬠or ââ¬Å"warning.â⬠Summon is also descended from monere, originally in the form of the Latin verb summonere, which means ââ¬Å"warn secretlyâ⬠(the first syllable is a variant of sub-); the English verb means ââ¬Å"send for,â⬠with the connotation of an imperative; to summon up is to call forth or evoke, as in the notion of summoning up courage or another emotion. Something that can be summoned is summonable, and one who summons is a summoner. Summons is a noun meaning ââ¬Å"an act of summoning,â⬠usually in the form of an order to appear in court; the plural is summonses. Other words based on monere include monitor, which originally referred to one who admonishes, checks, or reminds and came to mean ââ¬Å"guide,â⬠ââ¬Å"instructor,â⬠and ââ¬Å"overseer.â⬠This word has several other distinct senses: First, the monitor lizards, a genus that includes the Komodo dragon, were supposedly named for a habit some species have of standing on two legs or acting otherwise to check on or warn about the presence of predators. Second, a Civil Warââ¬âera warship armored with iron was dubbed the Monitor with the notion that it would admonish its foes; the name was applied to similar and not-so-similar vessels for the next hundred years. Finally, the use of the word to describe equipment for checking the quality of electronic transmissions led to its employment in reference to display screens for televisions, computers, and other devices. Then thereââ¬â¢s monument, from the sense of monere pertaining to reminding: A monument is a written document, record, or tribute; a structure honoring a person or event or something pertaining to a notable person or thing; or a boundary marker. A national monument is one of a class of places set aside by a country for its historic, scenic, or scientific significance. Because of the associations of structural monuments with grandeur, something great or outstanding is said to be monumental; monumentally is the adverbial form. Finally, monster derives from a sense of ââ¬Å"something that warnsâ⬠: The word describes an abnormal, strange, or terrifying living thing; something cruel, threatening, or ugly; or something especially large or successful. Monster is employed as an adjective as well in the last sense, while monstrous applies for the other meanings and monstrously serves as an adverb. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Labor Ethics in the India and United States Essay
Labor Ethics in the India and United States - Essay Example It is evidently clear from the discussion that India is a huge victim of child labor and there are millions of such kids working in the adverse condition not only in the rural areas but in metropolitan cities as well. According to sources, this frequency was closed to 60 million in 2009-2010. Ã There are numerous reasons behind this child labor among which the most critical is obviously the poverty. Almost 350.46 million people in India are living below the poverty line in 20122. This provides a golden opportunity to the employers looking for cheap labor which can be exploited by them in order to generate the maximum profit margin. Lack of literacy rate in the country is also a major problem which also stems out from poverty. Another important aspect is the absence of SME sector and possession by the major corporation like TATA and Birla in the corporate sector. The child labor issue in the United States though still exists but has been successfully taken care by the authorities th rough nationwide measures. There is a maximum of 800,000 underaged workers that are employed and almost all are in rural areas3. In cities, the rate of child labor is almost down to zero which is not an easy job for the government in a big country. This was possible due to the strict measure by the government against child labor and the awareness they created in the masses. But above all the main cause is the back up of the government in order to facilitate parents in the bringing up their children. Low wages by employers in India is a tool very effectively used by them throughout the country. A daily wages worker of Texport in Bengaluru who is an authorized vendor for world-renowned clothing company Gap told sources that she is only paid 22 paise for an hour4. This is to make sure that she has not enough by the end of the day to take home and has to work late hours which help the company in meeting the orders on time. The main cause behind this low wages is the absence of adequate and strict regulations by the government. On the other hand, low and middle-class people are not encouraged to initiate their own business at small scale.

International Management Ethics and Values Essay - 1
International Management Ethics and Values - Essay Example Sheââ¬â¢s frequently hungry and almost always tired, she said. ââ¬Å"Living and working like this, by the time you are twenty, you are already old, and your health is failing. When you reach thirty, they fire you. It is not just. I have no savings. I have nothing.â⬠Akter came to Washington to tell her story as a coalition of civic, labour and religious organizations launched a public campaign seeking to highlight what it calls labour abuses in Bangladesh and other poor nations. Spearheading the push is Charles Kernaghan, the labour activist who exposed poor working conditions at Central American factories that made goods for the Kathie Lee Gifford clothing line. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. spokesman Bill Wertz acknowledged there have been ââ¬Å"violations of working hour standardsâ⬠at the factory where Akter works. He said the retail giant is trying to work with the suppliers to make improvements. If the manufacturer doesnââ¬â¢t shape up, Wertz said, Wal-Mart may sever i ts ties to the factory. ââ¬Å"We canââ¬â¢t condone certain kinds of practices and wonââ¬â¢t do business with companies that fail to improve,â⬠he said. Thatââ¬â¢s what Akter is afraid of. If Wal-Mart terminates its purchasing agreements with the factory, she and her co-workers could find themselves without jobs. Lisa Rahman, nineteen, of Dhaka, Bangladesh, said thatââ¬â¢s what happened at the factory where she used to work after she and other workers began complaining about bad working conditions, including twelve hour workdays, filthy restrooms and unsanitary drinking water. She worked at the Shah Makhdum factory, which made goods for Walt Disney Co., including clothing in its Winnie the Pooh line. ââ¬Å"I was crying all the time,â⬠she said. After workers at the plant complained and took their woes to the media, Disney pulled out of the factory, leaving 200 employees out of work, she said. Mark Spears, Disneyââ¬â¢s compliance director, said the company h as ââ¬Å"experienced poor conditions, in Bangladesh.â⬠When the company investigated the allegations, it found that conditions were not as serious as workers had alleged. But its subcontractor decided to cease buying goods from the manufacturer. ââ¬Å"Clearly the publicity may not have helped,â⬠Spears said. Kernaghan said the ease with which multinational corporations relocate has a chilling effect on the willingness of workers to speak out about what he said are widespread abuses of workers in many poor countries. He said he has been urging Disney and other companies to stay and work to improve conditions rather than exit quickly to avoid bad publicity. ââ¬Å"All it would take is one word from Michael Eisner,â⬠Disneyââ¬â¢s chairman and CEO, and the jobs could return to the factory where Rahman worked, he said. ââ¬Å"Bangladesh has good labour laws,â⬠said officials from the country. ââ¬Å"It is unlikely any factories would permit such poor working cond itions,â⬠they added. ââ¬Å"Can a person work eighteen hours a day?â⬠said Mohammed G. Hussain, commerce counsellor for Bangladeshââ¬â¢s embassy in Washington. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s impossible.â⬠The officials questioned why Kernaghan and his associates are raising the sweatshop issue publicly, pointing out that it could affect employment in the deeply impoverished nation, where 40 percent of adults are unemployed. Adapted from K.G. Grimsley, ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËAlready Oldââ¬â¢ In Bangladeshâ⬠, The Washington Post, 25 September 2002, as reprinted in J.K. Milne, Ethics for International Business
